Description

STK 3534 1979 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper

Volkswagen began production of the second generation Type 2 Microbus in 1967 and it continued through 1979. The packaging was nearly perfect - a big space inside and a small footprint outside. It was dubbed the 'Bay-Window' Microbus with a one-piece windshield, sliding side door and a total of eight elongated windows for great visibility. There were many configurations of the Type 2, one of which was the Westfalia-Werke built 'Campmobile' – marketed by Volkswagen as 'a cottage that goes where you want to go'. This 1979 VW Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile is an iconic head-turner. It has undergone a full restoration (2018), but maintains the originality of the vehicle. Its exterior was professionally refinished in Mexican Beige with a White top and bumpers. The Westfalia Campmobile is equipped with the 'pop-up' top w/side canvas/screens (all new). As good as the camper looks on the outside, this Volkswagen is also classic and mostly original inside. Access is via a sliding door, revealing original Tan and Green Tartan cloth upholstery. The front passenger seat is a swiveling 'captain's chair', allowing it to face the rear area. The 'living area' houses a full kitchen featuring a sink and propane gas stove. There's also a removable, rotating walnut table and rear bench seat that doubles as a second bed platform. The main bed is located under the pop-top roof, which comes with screened zip-out windows. Other standard features include birch plywood cabinetry, ice/cold box, area heater, storage compartments, electric hookups and seat cushions. The bus is also equipped with the original working AM/FM/Cassette radio (very rare) and all of the factory air-conditioning components (A/C system needs TLC). The interior floors are nicely covered with quality short-loop carpeting. Horsepower is furnished by a 2000cc air-cooled VW 4-cylinder that was factory rated at 70bhp w/strong low-end torque. The engine has been partially rebuilt with new cylinders/pistons and cylinder heads. Other new components include the fuel pump, fuel filter, starter and rear main seal. This durable engine features Bosche L-Jetronic fuel injection and hydraulic valve lifters. It has recently received a full service including tune-up and oil change. The boxer motor is backed by a 4-speed manual transaxle. The chassis is fitted with manual disc/drum brakes (all new components) and steel wheels with center caps and Nexen radial tires. (The spare tire is mounted on the front, but there is also a storage area inside for an additional tire.) New shock absorbers have also been installed all-around. If you are looking for something a little smaller than a Winnebago, and a lot more unique, this may be your ticket. This VW Westfalia Campmobile is a sound investment and timeless ride - life is short. ALL VEHICLES SOLD “AS IS”.
